5PM this Saturday, the New York Department of Transportation (NYDOT) is closing Interstate 84 Westbound at Exit 1 in Connecticut in order to replace the bridge over Dingle Ridge Rd. A couple weeks later, I-84 East will be closed and the other bridge replaced. The thing is, the replacement bridges are already complete and ready to be slid into their new abutments. During the closures traffic will be diverted onto nearby Route 6. This is a rather heavily traveled stretch of highway, so it is going to be a mess no matter what they do.
Step 1: Build new spans (COMPLETE)
Step 2: Closing of I-84 West, demolition of existing span. (THIS WEEKEND)
Step 3: Moving new span onto new abutments (THIS WEEKEND)
Step 4: I-84 Westbound reopens.
Step 5: Rinse and repeat eastbound
Time lapse imagery of work to date. There will be cameras running during the span replacement.

There seem to be a few discrepancies between the illustrations and what is happening on the ground. I'll be interesting to see if they can pull this one off.

Cute, right? Seriously the bridges will be wide enough for three lanes. Unfortunately the rest of the highway in the vicinity is a mix of two and three lane sections that get jammed daily, to the point that portable digital highway signs are permanently installed along sections warning of the same delays, day in and day out.
